What is a performance appraisal?

The performance appraisal is a conversation the employee and his/her manager where the functioning of the employee is discussed. The main target of the conversation isn't to evaluate the employee but it is rather intended as a means to give feedback on the current performance and to follow up on (and adjust as necessary) certain objectives and development actions.

During a performance appraisal feedback is given on:

  • Tasks as described in the job description;
  • Competences as part of the competence profile;
  • Personal development plan (PDP).

Several performance appraisals can be held each year (both formal or informal). We recommend to hold at least one performance appraisal during the evaluation cycle.

The conversation itself contains different stages where both the employee and manager play a role in.
